I believe in a kind of magic. Jung called it synchronicity, the confluence between your mind and the world. I used to spin big theories about what it meant and how it works but it’s a simple magic. It is learning to recognize the quiet voice inside of you. It is learning to recognize symbols from your own mind when you encounter them in the world.
That shock of recognition when you encounter certain kinds of coincidence, that’s your mind and the world conspiring to communicate with you. Metaphor and symbol are the language of your deep self. We all have these experiences, the key is to notice them.
When a coincidence strikes a chord within you, try to stay with that sense of resonance. Does it seem somehow symbolic or mythic? Note that, remember the symbol. Don’t look for reasons, look for patterns. Cultivate a poetic appreciation for the experiences. Expect them, be waiting for them to irrupt into your awareness.
Ultimately, what you are doing is establishing a communication channel with a part of your self that is normally outside of your conscious awareness. But the knowledge coming to you via this channel isn’t solely about you. That part also watches the world and it has seen many things that you have missed, things you’ve disregarded. Learning to trust these other parts of yourself, letting these signals influence you, is the magic. It is a way to more fully be yourself.
